foot ailment

November 12, 2008 at 6:22 a.m.

Hubby may have a broken his right foot. Well, not actually a break...it's what the doc is calling stress fractures. He strained some of this and pulled some of that. He also has the makings of bone spurs on his heel.

Don't know how or exactly when he did it. Could have been Wednesday before Halloween when he slipped a little bit on some acorns. Could have been the next day when he walked across our back yard and found a wee little low spot, aka: Jethro dug another hole.

I took him to his doc to get his foot checked out. I love his doc. He's an old hippy who finally got a haircut and a job. Feels like you've known him for years when you first meet him. I love people like that.

The doc ordered xrays and decided that hubby definitely had the makings of bone spurs on his heel. Funny, hubby has never complained about his heel. His doc said he "thought" he saw some stress fractures and a few strained ligaments or tendons.

Anyway, he told hubby to stay off his foot until he could see the orthopedic guy. The doc said he might need a boot or possibly a cast but to stay off his foot and let the orthopedic guy decide what he wants to do. So hubby has been off work for a while using crutches to get around when he absolutely needed to.

We waited almost a week with no news of an appointment with the ortho guy. Hubby was anxious to get all this over with. We finally went back to his doc on Monday to get an extended work excuse because the one we had didn't cover the days hubby had missed from work so far.

I left hubby in my car to run in and pick up the excuse. His doc had said in our last appointment that it'd be no big deal.

Lemme tell ya. It was a big fat hairy deal.

First, the office staff had no idea what I was talking about. When they finally figured out what I wanted, they told me the doc wouldn't be in for another hour. sigh.

The big big boss happened to be in the office and said he'd call me when the doc had ok'd the excuse and he'd send us a fax. I told him that I'd better just wait because we had placed 8 calls so far that hadn't been returned and that hubby had to have this excuse to turn in that day for payroll.

He searched the phone log book and found all 8 of them. I know he thought I was exaggerating. I wasn't. He escorted me back to an office and had the head nurse come in and talk to me.

First thing she did was scream at me about how she'd been out for 4 days and wasn't even there when hubby came in and how it wasn't her fault that things didn't get done.

I told her that I wasn't blaming anyone. I knew their office had been extremely busy with an epidemic stomach virus and other stuff. Gah. She kept on and on...screaming and ranting and yelling.

The big big boss, Larry, was in the room when I asked the nurse to stop yelling and screaming at me. I just wanted an extended work excuse.

She finally got his file and said she wouldn't give me one. The doc would have to do that. sigh.

Larry stepped in and asked her why she couldn't write the excuse. That nurse started screaming that hubby's file hadn't been updated. No xrays showed up in his file. Nothing about his foot except he'd had an office visit complaining about his foot. Not a single update after that initial visit.

I asked her if anyone had contacted the orthopedic doc to set up an appointment yet. No. Nothing had been done.

Larry got mad about that. He insisted that she stop everything and work on updating hubby's file. The office was full of sick people needing care. How was she going to put those people off?

I told Larry that I was going to check on hubby out in my car and that I'd be back in an hour or so to pick up the excuse. That would give him time to get the doc to sign off on it. I told him if he'd give me the name and number of the ortho doc, I'd call him myself and schedule the appointment.

He said no. He asked me to go get hubby out of the car and come back to the office.

I got out to the car and hubby was about to explode. I got him inside and let him go to the restroom and then he hopped, hobbled back to the office.

Larry got busy apologizing to hubby about all the confusion. Then the screaming yelling nurse came in and started her stuff again.

Hubby was shocked that this nurse was yelling and screaming at us. Finally he spoke. He told the nurse that under no circumstances was he going to be yelled and screamed at by a nurse. We were simply there to pick up an excuse for work to cover the extra time off he'd had to take off waiting for them to get an appointment with this other doc. If she couldn't write the excuse, to find someone who could. We'd leave, make the ortho appointment ourselves and that would be the end of it.

She got worse and worse. Hubby finally asked Larry if he would dismiss her from our meeting. It was clear that she was wanting to play the blame game. We wanted no part of that. He told Larry to get his doc to fill out the excuse.

Larry got the doc to come in for a few minutes. He was all smiles when he came in the office. A delight after what we'd already been through. The doc wrote the excuse and asked when the ortho appointment was. When hubby told him that he didn't have one yet, he got quite upset. He didn't yell and scream 'cause like I said, he's an old hippy. He just picked up the phone and made the appointment for Monday. That simple. It was THAT simple.

The doc told Larry that maybe the nurse didn't have enough time off and maybe he should make her take another vacation to clear her head. A mandatory vacation. At least 2 weeks while they sort out why things didn't get done like they were supposed to.

Larry agreed and we got the hell out of there before the nurse had another chance to explode.

I don't know. That nurse may have been getting that virus. Maybe she didn't feel well. She may have had other things going on. She may have walked in that morning and realized not a single person did her job while she was out. I know how that feels. It's overwhelming. But I don't take it out on my customers. Never. Never. Never.

I hope that nurse will be ok.

Hubby is on the road to healing too. His foot has stopped swelling. The pain is almost gone. Maybe he'll be completely healed by Monday so the ortho guy won't have to do anything. Let's hope, anyway.
