Our little bitty paint party has evolved into a slight kitchen remodeling party at our house in the country.

Hubby decided he really didn't love our plain and simple old wainscoting. Plain and simple because it was only a chair rail nailed (and glued!) to the sheetrock walls. The lower portion of the walls were painted 2 or 3 shades darker than the top. He wanted to take the chair rail down and install beaded board.

I have to admit that I was not a fan of the chair rail either. That strip of molding served no purpose other than to catch dust and distract the eye from my crappy "fad" (effin' bad)painting skillz. I had tried ragrolling and sponge painting. What was I thinking!

He tried to pop the chair railing off with something akin to a crowbar. Some of it did pop right off. And some of it came off with little hunks of sheetrock still attached. *sigh*

"Don't worry", he said. He could just spackle those little places and no one would ever know. Funny how those little potholes in the walls can turn into speed bumps so quickly. We sanded and sanded. Then we sanded some more. Almost a whole day we spent sanding the walls by hand to get them smooth again. And they are very smooth. So smooth that I really don't want to wainscot them at all. I just wanted to put 2 coats of a nice 'greige' paint on them and be done with it. No ragrolling. No sponging. Just plain and simple.

But.

He went to the big huge building supply store with the LOWESt prices and bought the beaded board. Enough to do the whole kitchen in wainscoting. Before, the chair rail defined the dining area down to where the cabinets began. Apparently while shopping, he went all Einstein on me and made a decision to do the whole kitchen...which meant that the kitchen cabinets had to come out to install the beaded board behind them.

I knew something was up when he practically ran into the kitchen, crowbar thingy in hand, and said "Sher, I've been thinking...".

NO! NO! Do NOT do that. Do not think.

Things get really involved when he thinks.

Thinking is what turned our little bitty paint party into a kitchen remodel. All I wanted to do was freshen up the paint. That's it. Just a wee little touch up.

He decided all by himself that the beautiful honey oak cabinetry should be painted white along with the wainscoting.

NO! Too much. Too much white. Too much effin' white!

Since we do want to be in our house by Christmas (this year), I managed to talk him out of painting the cabinets.

He took the 4 gallons of white paint back and brought home some little cans of one-step stain in a nice satin finish to match the cabinets. We stained the beaded board and moulding and it looks great. Matches the cabinets perfectly. We will start installing this weekend after we paint the walls.

Since he didn't get his way with the white cabinets and white beaded board, I told him he could pick the paint color for the top portion of the walls. He is giddy with excitement.

I'm not too worried. I'll learn to live with whatever color he chooses. Besides, I had to compromise. *snort*
