I was so glad to get back to work yesterday. I called all the customers that had appointments on Tuesday and got them all rescheduled for the following week. Not too bad.
Most of the customers we had scheduled for yesterday were not sure if we were open because they still did not have power at their homes. I'm glad they called to find out.
They were more excited than we were. We invited them to stay and soak up the A/C. Most of them did. The coffee pot did overtime yesterday. Everyone had storm stories to tell. Everyone had "evacuees" at their home. They were glad to come to the shop to rest.
I reserved 2 rooms at a hotel here about a week before the storm for our relatives that evacuate from New Orleans. They needed their own space to destroy weather the storm. They brought their cooler with them and I stocked it with ice, sodas and water. No beer. No vodka. No whiskey. I stocked their room with the required Little Debbies and Cheetos and told them I'd see them after the storm. They called yesterday morning and said they would be leaving before noon to go back home. They were very kind this time. I think. Anyway, nobody got killed or needed stitches.
V1 is still without power so I invited her and her hubby to stay with me at my house. She didn't want to leave her house unattended because the word was out about the looters. I told her to at least come have a hot meal and take a warm shower.
She and her husband came over and I enjoyed having their company. They mentioned the horrible traffic in town. Her husband said the interstate was bumper to bumper with people headed back to the coast and the New Orleans area. Highway 51 was clogged too. We sat on the porch and watched traffic for an hour or so while enjoying a piece of egg custard pie (Thanks, Mom!) and a cup of coffee. V1 said she could have sworn she saw "the relatives" creep by. I asked did they give her the finger. She said they didn't so it couldn't have been them.
They left to go home around 9. The house got really quiet after that so I did the laundry that had piled up over night. (Where does that stuff come from? I washed and dried everything before the storm.) I vacuumed the carpets (again) and mopped the kitchen and bathrooms. I even got some dusting done. If I had been a "good" host, I'd have done that before my company came to dinner. Heh.
Son has to go back to school today. I ironed his uniforms last night so he'd be ready. He's been keeping up with his reading homework. Didn't let him slide on that even though he tried to convince me that his teachers wouldn't care. He's already memorized the poetry he has to recite this month. He says he's going to recite all of them at once and get it over with. I don't blame him. Get it over with.
I did let him slide by staying up until hubby got home from work last night. It'd been awhile since he'd actually seen him. He's talked to him several times on the phone, but he's been asleep when hubby has breezed by for a quick change of clothes and a sandwich.
Hubby finally got home around 10 last night. He hugged Son so tight his eyes looked like they were bulging. He took a hot shower and went straight to bed without any dinner. He got up some time during the night and heated up the plate of food I had left for him in the fridge. He left me a note saying how good it was this morning. I didn't even know he had left for work. I slept like the dead.
He called me an hour ago and told me that a huge pine tree had fallen across the back yard of our house in the country some time last night. It missed the house by 5 or 6 feet. Whew! I knew we'd had tornado watches and warnings, but I didn't realize how close they really were.
He also told me that last night at work, a tornado had missed them by a half mile. He said it was already dark and they couldn't see it. The torrential rains drove them to take cover in their trucks, thank goodness. He saw the damage this morning and it really shook him to know he was so close. He's called the office and is having a weather radio delivered to him at the work site.
Now it's time to take Son to school and get to work.
