Go away Gustav

August 31, 2008 at 8:21 a.m.

Hubby left about 1 a.m. this morning to open the contraflow. I spoke with him about 5:30 and he said things were going extremely well.

He said most of the people had already started the evacuation process on Friday and Saturday. This afternoon will get crazy, I'm sure. There are a lot of people that will wait until the very last minute to leave New Orleans and surrounding areas.

Again, it looks like we will get the northeast quadrant of this hurricane. That's the bad stuff. Wind and driving rain, tornados, falling trees, losing power and water. We've prepared as much as we can. We had tarps tacked to the roof on our house in the country and boarded up the windows. Hubby and I taped off our windows here in town.

I'll be heading to my parents house this afternoon before the squalls start rolling in here. But first, I'm going to the nursing home to visit with my mother-in-law and go to the church service there with her per her request. She wants to pray for hubby's safety since he'll be working out in the storm.

This time, the city has taken steps to ensure no one has an excuse not to leave. The state has a $7 million contract to provide 700 buses to evacuate the elderly, the sick and anyone around the region without transportation.

They are using busses this time to help those without transportation, the sick and the elderly to evacuate. Very wise, Nagin. It sickened me to see the photos of the busses just sitting there during Katrina...knowing very well that a lot of deaths could have been avoided if more people had been offered transportation.

From the Daily News:
This time there will be no shelter of last resort. The doors to the Superdome will be locked. Those who stay will be on their own.

I even read that Ray Nagin told those who will not evacuate to make sure they had an axe because they might have to chop through the roof on their homes to get to safety.

Yet some will stay to protect their homes from looters. Other will stay simply to loot the businesses and homes of those who did evacuate.

I'll update when I can.
