Welcome to the world, Ethan!

May 15, 2008 at 6:05 a.m.

I had the sweetest girl show up at the shop late yesterday afternoon. She asked to borrow the phone. Seeing as how she was pregnant out to ========> here, I let her use the cordless phone so she could sit down in a comfortable chair to talk.

She talked for about half a minute and asked could she stay and rest awhile. Of course I said yes. She explained to me that she'd just come from the doctor's office and that her baby was due this past Monday. She was walking to try to get her contractions to speed up. That's right. She was having contractions. 8 minutes apart. The doctor had sent her home...again. She'd been there twice this week already.

I finished with my customer and made him another appointment for next month. I glanced over at the girl and she looked completely exhausted. Poor thing.

I offered her a Mountain Dew to drink and she gulped that thing down. (I completely forgot that pregnant women are supposed to stay away from caffeine.) I offered her some water and she drank that too. I noticed that her poor feet were swollen so I got out a wooden box that my dad made for me to stand on to do tall customers and got her to prop up her feet.

It wasn't long until Hubby popped in the shop. I trimmed his hair and pampered on him for a little bit until my last customer arrived.

I was cutting my last customer's hair for his wedding announcement photos and
V1 was cleaning around her station when the girl asked if she could use the restroom.

I pointed her to the restroom and finished up my customer. V1 was finished with her work and I told her she could go on home. She said she wasn't going anywhere until she could figure out what was going on with with the pregnant girl. Hubby thought the girl was a customer waiting for V1.

We waited for a good long while for the girl in the restroom. Finally, I knocked on the door to see if she was ok. At first she didn't answer, which scared me. When she did answer, I realized that she was upset.

She came out to the reception area and sat down again. Hubby got a cool towel to put around her neck. (That's his medical cure for everything. Heh) She told us that she was miserable and just wanted this baby to hurry up and get here. She said she didn't know what was wrong with her because she'd failed at everything she'd ever tried and that now she was failing to get her baby born.

We didn't want to laugh because she was so despondent but good Lord and butter, she didn't have anything to do with when that baby felt like making an appearance.

V1 told her that she had felt the same exact way when she was pregnant with her daughter. Her mother told her "the apple falls from the tree when it's good and ripe." Instantly, the girl had to use the restroom again. Hubby fussed at me for giving her Mountain Dew and said the poor girl would be up all night peeing. I felt like shit.

The sweet little girl's feet were still swollen so I offered to drive her home. I told her that I thought she'd done enough walking for today. Hubby asked where her car was and she said that her neighbor had dropped her off at the doctor's office. She said she'd called her husband to tell him he could keep the car and work overtime because she wasn't having the baby yet. Then another contraction hit only this time, it was a good one. A real good one.

Thank goodness V1 was stubborn and decided to hang around. She got the girl to breathe right through it. I told hubby to watch the clock. Another real good contraction hit about 4 minutes later and here came hubby with another cool towel. That man, I swear.

She had to use the restroom again. I told hubby that I think her water broke with her peeing so much. He swore to goodness it was the Mountain Dew I gave her and thanks to me her baby wouldn't sleep at night for at least a year. I told him to shut up and fetch another "cool towel". Gahhh, does he not watch any daytime drama? You're supposed to boil water!

When the girl came out of the restroom, she looked a little scared. V1 asked her if her water broke. She said she thought that maybe it had. She said she couldn't stop peeing. Hubby glanced at me and told her it was probably the Mountain Dew. I wanted to throttle the man. Really, I did.

I asked the girl again if I could drive her home or maybe to the hospital. She asked to use the phone again. Right when she dialed the number, another contraction hit. According to hubby, they were running 3-4 minutes apart. She called and asked her neighbor if she could meet her at the hospital because she thought she was having the baby for real this time.

Hubby loaded her in his truck and took off to the hospital. My son was with my parents for "their afternoon" so V1 called them to let them know what was going on. Mom asked if she needed to come help so V1 said sure, why not? and asked her to bring my son with her.

Next thing you know, we all swarmed in the waiting room. The ER clerk came and asked hubby to fill out some papers. (I died laughing and thought about asking him to get the clerk a cool towel but thought better.) He told her that he didn't even know the girl's name much less anything about her. We explained the whole thing to the clerk and she was quite amused.

Turns out, the girl had already filled out the paperwork 2 weeks ago. They took her upstairs to labor and delivery. The neighbor finally showed up and she said she was waiting to call the girl's husband until the Dr. told us that the baby was definitely going to get here today.

Hubby told the neighbor that she might as well call him because her contractions were stronger and 3 minutes apart. The neighbor decided to go ahead and call him and her husband said he was on his way to the hospital.

When her husband arrived, we felt better. The girl had dilated to 7 and I knew the baby would be born soon. She asked me what our names were because she couldn't remember with all the excitement. We all told her and she said that we were angels. Her husband thanked us for taking good care of her.

Last night around 9 o'clock, her husband called and said he had a fine son. He weighed 8lbs 2 oz and was 20-3/4 inches long and his name is Ethan. He has a head full of dark brown hair like his mom. Awwwwww.

He thanked Hubby for taking his wife to the hospital and he thanked me and V1 for taking care of her. He said that his wife keeps calling us her angels. He said that her parents were on the way here from Louisiana and that his parents were already there. I felt better knowing that they were not alone. He invited us to visit them today at the hospital. I can't wait to meet Ethan!

I was so blessed yesterday to meet a wonderful new family.
