Busy week ahead

April 22, 2008 at 5:44 a.m.

V1 had surgery yesterday on her mouth. Bone grafts. And the dentist fixed her receding gums.

She can't work today. SHE thinks she can, but I won't let her. She's on heavy pain medication. Pain meds and driving do not mix. Pain meds and scissors probably do not mix either.

She wants to come in and at least answer the phone. I told her to stay in bed and rest. She said she feels guilty leaving me at the shop alone and she's not in much pain at all.

I told her not to even worry about it. I've got it under control. If I'm busy, the answering machine will catch the phone. Walk-in's won't be happening this week anyway. I'm overbooked with appointments.

Virgie is coming in every morning anyway. She found out that V1 is going to be out for a day or two and she jumped at the chance to hang out with me. She loves to answer the phone. That way she knows what's going on around town. I caught her on the phone Friday asking a lady why she needed her hair done on Thursday instead of Friday. And those little ladies? They're dying to spill their guts to Virgie. What would normally be a 2 minute phone call to schedule an appointment turns into a 15 minute "where're ya going? whatcha gonna be doing? who's going with ya?" conversation when Virgie answers the phone.

She's sooooo funny. She'll get all the information and then she'll holler across the shop that Miz So-n-So needs her hair done on Thursday because she's going to the gambling boat with her church lady friends. Then she'll make motions with her hands like she's eating. Ahhh! They're going to eat at the gambling boat! But that's not what Virgie screams across the shop. V1 and SB** try not to let Virgie answer the phone too much. I say let her go for it.

Yep. This week will be fun. It's always fun when Virgie hangs around.

**SB is having a PET scan done on Thursday to better determine the stage of the cancer. He starts radiation and chemo on Monday. He'll have radiation every day and chemo twice a week. On chemo days, he'll stay overnight in the hospital. He'll spend the rest of the time staying in a hotel that has agreed to donate the room for as long as he needs it. Blessings on the hotel!

The Dr. told him there is no cure for the cancer he has. I don't know if that's because it's advanced (definitely stage III, possibly stage IV) or not. The Dr. told him this cancer almost always returns. He told him he will try to shrink it and that would ease his pain. He's on 180mg of morphine daily with lorcet taken in between doses of the morphine. Surgery is still an option, though the Dr. is hesitant to perform surgery unless it's absolutely necessary.

The morphine seems to be handling his pain. He wants to come back to work because he's not hurting as much. His Dr. told him NO! I told him to save all that energy for healing.

Of course, we want nothing more than for him to be healed and able to do what he wants to do. I have a strong feeling that he WILL be doing what he wants to do, whether he's sick or not.
That's just SB. Gotta love that guy.
