SB

April 09, 2008 at 5:58 a.m.

I talked to SB last night. His doctor has upped his morphine to 60 mg every 12 hours and loratabs every 4-6 hours. His pain is manageable now and he is able to function a bit more. He is getting much needed rest, finally.

He has been keeping himself busy by filling out tons of paperwork to try to get his SSI started. Truth is, it may take too long for him to be approved. That is, IF he is approved. Red tape...

He is definitely at Stage III. He may be at Stage IV if the MRI he had last week confirms a spot on his liver that a CT scan showed. That means that the cancer has metastisized.

His mind is ready to fight this. I'm glad he's hitting this head on. It'd be so easy just to give in.

So many people call and ask about him. His customers are wonderful. They call daily to ask about him. They have been really patient with V1 and me while we try to work them into our schedules.

V1 and I decided from the get-go that we'd put aside all the money earned from his customers. That money will be used for SB to commute back and forth to his doctor's appointments. His parents are retired and on a very limited income.

Our next project is to raise enough money for a good used camper. It would be so much easier for him if he had a temporary home away from home. I need to get this ok'd from SB first. He may not want to live in a little camper but it sure beats spending $50 a day for gas back and forth to the hospital in Jackson. The trips he makes already wears him out and he's not even started his treatments yet. I know that once he starts treatments, he will feel even worse than he does now.

They do have access to a dumpy camper that is horrible disrepair. I talked to his Dad on Monday about it. I told him that SB would have to be so careful once he starts treatments. He doesn't need to be exposed to any kind of germs because his immune system will be compromised for a long time. No molds or mildew!

Some of the local folks have come in to check on him. They don't know him personally, but still, they are interested. He is quite a character and most people here know who he is or at least recognize his name. I almost typed "mane" which is even funnier because he does have really long hair. Heh.

Some of these folks "tsk tsk" when we mention Stage III cancer. They tell us to make the best of the time he has left. Some of them have even said if they were in the same situation as he, they'd call Dr. Kevorkian. I get so angry when I hear them say that. We are NOT going to give up. No surrender. We are going to fight this!

Some have told V1 and me that we need to face reality. We have. We decided from the moment he found out about his cancer that we will fight this with him and for him. We cannot give up. To give up is to give in. We're not about to give in.

SB is such an important person in our lives. Even when he's sick, he still calls us to keep us motivated at work. He said to me last night "I've got this covered. What I need you and V1 to do is keep my customers happy until I get back to work. Remember, Mrs. B. likes her hair washed 3 times instead of twice. Charge her $22...blah blah".

Watch out cancer. Here we come. We are going to kick your ass.
